Gracious interiors characterize many American homes, but the refined look is not always replicated in the kitchen.

Designer Valerie Corsaro of Clive Christian Ridgewood says the kitchen featured on these pages, which replaces a dark cherry wood kitchen, was designed to complement a sophisticated interior.

"For this reason, we specified hand-painted cabinetry that has a furniture look," says Corsaro. "The cabinet accommodating the double Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezer, for example, is designed to look like an armoire. There is also a freestanding hutch with divided lights and beveled glass doors, which holds an abundance of dishes, bowls and platters."

But it is the hand-painted finish that sets this kitchen apart. The cabinets feature silver leaf that was laid sheet by sheet, and then glazed with an amber wash, which gives it a platinum finish.

"Silver is the new gold," says Corsaro. "In terms of the color palette, this is a very neutral kitchen, but we have given it a lot of bling. The metal elements, such as the silver-leaf detailing, antique brass knobs, English bronze faucets, and backsplash accent tiles add character, while still providing a subtle backdrop. It's a very light, tranquil space, with a touch of sparkle ideal for a growing family."

As with all Clive Christian projects, the kitchen was handcrafted in England.
