AIR QUALITY has an unseen yet powerful impact on customer experience at large shopping malls and entertainment centres.

Temperzone was asked to supply more than 200 packaged roof-top air conditioning units for all stages of the main complex, Pak'N Save, McDonald's, The Warehouse and the entertainment and cinema complex. These were based on an existing range, but redesigned by Temperzone to utilise the new ozone-friendly, chlorine-free refrigerant, R410A.

Business manager for Temperzone Tony King says the company's challenge with this project was to upgrade the existing designs with the available industry knowledge, and within a limited time frame.

"Refrigerant R410A is in its infancy in New Zealand and Australia and little documentation is available regarding heat transfer coils, so we had to test and re-test at every step to confirm the calculated design figures," he says.

"Our team for this project worked together to build the prototype units and to thoroughly test them while maintaining the delivery schedule requirements."

These new units had to meet the new Minimum Energy Performance Standard regulations, to be introduced in 2007 and 2008. To do this Temperzone had to build a new, more sophisticated two-room test laboratory, while also building the prototype units.

The result was the first range of packaged roof top air conditioning units in New Zealand that use R410A refrigerants produced within a six-month time frame.
