Appliances contribute significantly to the overall look of your kitchen. For this reason, it's just as important to select appliances for their styling and visual appeal as it is for their functionality and performance.

Located in Nelson, this mediterranean-style house, designed and built by David Reid Homes, has four bedrooms, plus a study, large tiled decks, and a spacious open-plan kitchen and living area.

The house is designed to appeal to the mid to upper end of the market, says Sue Hopkins from David Reid Homes.

To meet the expectations of potential buyers, interior designer Susi Matz chose Corian benchtops,glass splashbacks and Smeg appliances for the kitchen.

"Smeg has a high profile both locally and overseas," says Hopkins. "Many of our clients are ex-pats returning to New Zealand from abroad, and often they are familiar with the modern styling and well-designed features of Smeg appliances."

The appliance selection includes a Smeg 90cm freestanding stainless steel oven with a five-hob gas cooktop and a fan-forced oven, plus a storage compartment. It comes complete with pot stands, a roasting/grill pan, a rotisserie kit, a wok ring and a chrome shelf. The single-piece hob surface is easy to clean and has automatic electronic ignition.

Mark Jones from Applico, Smeg's New Zealand agent, says the SNZ91MFX freestanding oven is the only 90cm oven with twin fans.

"This makes it the fastest preheating 90cm oven on the market, and solves the problem of uneven cooking," he says.

Mounted above the oven is a Smeg 90cm-wide stainless steel canopy hood, which features a quiet, three-speed fan and easy-clean filters.

Other Smeg appliances in the kitchen include a 1000W stainless steel microwave with matching trim kit; and a quiet and efficient semi-integrated SNZ642IS dishwasher, which features multiple wash programmes, a half-load wash option and a height-adjustable top basket.

"In addition to the performance and features offered by these Smeg appliances, we were also conscious of how well they would suit the contemporary design of the kitchen," says Hopkins. "The appliances' stainless steel finish complements the colour palette and the silver-toned fittings."
