Residential design for a young creative couple and their three cats.
This walk-up apartment split into two-levels was designed on a ‘no-design’ basis and it was about finding spaces for the different interests of the couple.
Project challenges
The space is relatively narrow in layout and quite spacious for two people.
A key challenge was how to bring two different personalities together and yet still have private spaces for each other without having so many different rooms so they can stay close and connected.
Both have very different interest and likes – one likes pottery, gardening, cooking, while the other likes music, reading and skating.
We wanted to acknowledge the differences and yet ensure the design and design process was still harmonious.

Overcoming those challenges
We utilised the split levels to allow for different pockets of spaces for different uses.
Level one is kept more private with the couple’s bedroom while level two features an open dining-kitchen area that extends to the music lounge and balcony.
The configuration allows for a seamless indoor/outdoor space and for the dining and music area to be together.
A long 3m table takes centre stage as the couple likes to host and have friends over.
This table also doubles up as a workstation for both.
Adhering to a “no-design” approach, the house walls are adorned with an eclectic collection of artworks and memorabilia collected from their travels while random, quirky, and colourful furniture across different styles furnish the space.
