Curved planes give a design edge to this apartment building clad in Alucobond
When a planned apartment building is going to provide a spectacular outlook, the most important aspect of the design brief will generally be incorporating a large number of windows and balconies.
D bah is a six-level apartment building at Duranbah Beach in Tweed Heads, NSW. Overlooking the Tweed River inlet, it also has views to the north over the Gold Coast, and south over bushland towards Byron Bay. To capitalise on this positioning, project designer Summerland Design has ensured every room in every apartment has views.
To include the required number of windows and balconies and create an attractive fae§ade, Summerland Design incorporated a series of curves into the design. Specifying Silver Metallic Alucobond for the roof edging and soffit allowed these curves to be achieved easily.
G James Glass & Aluminium project co-ordinator Ron Mitchell says Alucobond is ideal for projects like this because the panels are easy to fabricate and manipulate into most shapes and sizes.
"For this project, almost every panel had to be cut to a different shape and size, then routed, rolled and folded to create the curved edges. Once this was done, the Alucobond was then fixed using a water-tight, fixed cassette system," he says.
Alucobond, a light composite material consisting of two aluminium cover sheets and a polyethylene core, is a stable, flexible product. It is weather resistant, unbreakable, shock resistant and absorbs vibration, has a smooth surface and is easy to install.
