Expand the vanity and add details.Add sculptural tub.Create interest in the shower. Heated floors. ChallengesMeeting code requirements for the free-standing tub drain vent to the outside. The moulding over the entry doors and a wall register interfered with the new crown moulding for the tray ceiling. One wall of shower was an exterior wall.Design solutionsMarble is incorporated throughout the bathroom to add a feeling of luxury. To create interest to the wide expanse of flooring, a rug pattern with a mosaic inlay is centred on the free-standing tub and bay window. The tub drain issue was rectified with a 5cm diameter vent pipe.Eliminating the drop-in tub allowed for a symmetrically balanced vanity – this wall really becomes the focal point of the room – symmetry is created with the wall panels and light sconces on each side of the decorative mirrors. The minimalistic style and fluid lines of the plumbing fixtures add traditional, yet modern design to the vanity, tub and shower. The organic curves and pleasing proportions of the free-standing tub add elegance to the room – the volcanic limestone material is warm to the touch.In-floor heating was added to keep tile floors warm.A thicker wall with insulation was added to the shower where the recessed niches were located.Reworking the moulding above the entry doorway allowed for crown moulding to encircle the tray ceiling – the wall register was relocated under the soffit.A refined organic leaf chandelier mimics the shape in the mosaic floor tiles below.Another rug pattern with mosaic tiles is incorporated in the head wall of the shower to add a focal point in this space.
