Cladding transformed, interiors reworked for open-plan living and indoor-outdoor flow accentuated – this seaside home is unrecognisable

Renovation by Alex Urena, Alex Urena Design Studio

From the building designer:

Design brief and rationale

The brief for this project was to renovate an existing brick house, which originally had little interaction with its surroundings despite its privileged location and views.

Internal layouts were adapted to suit larger openings and an open-plan living style while focussing attention to the views from all areas, and enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection.

Recycled hardwood cladding covers the original brick walls.

Cladding is laid vertically and asymmetrically within the side elevations in order to provide perception of height to the original low pitch roof.

New deck areas and gallery stairs link the house to the yard while balancing the scale of the house.
