When a building appears to have passed its use-by date, there are usually two options demolition or refurbishment. But it often takes the eye of an expert to see the possibilities. The GCF Building in Parnell is a prime example of a renovation project that has completely transformed a dull, introspective building into a vibrant, contemporary retail space. Designed by Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects, the remodelled building incorporates a dramatic new facade featuring expansive glazing and Locarno fixed aluminium louvres.Architect Simon Carnachan says the louvres allow plenty of natural light into the building, but screen the direct sun on the west side. They also help to shield the exterior from the rain."Privacy was another benefit although there is a degree of separation from the street, there is also a connection. The louvres are fixed at such at angle that the people inside can see out, but those outside cannot see in." View of Locarno Louvres on the GCF Building in Parnell. Carnachan says the louvres also have a strong aesthetic role to play."The building is quite flat and needed some exterior modelling and shadowing. The fixed louvres and the awnings on the north side help to achieve this. The fixed louvres on this side of the building extend up past the deck to form the balustrading."Operable Locarno aluminium louvres feature in one side wall beside the first floor terrace. These can be closed to screen a neighbouring building, or for protection from the wind.Locarno Aluminium Louvres managing director Murray Giblin says the company specialises in the architectural market, providing customised solutions and design assistance, as well as installation project management.
