The metal facade on the Knox on Bowman building is a key design feature, providing a strong visual contrast to the solid sandstone base. Craft Metals was contracted to provide design assistance for this cladding system, as well as panel layout and joint detailing.
Technical marketing manager Dirk Janssen says Levels 5 and 6 are clad in the Rheinzink V25 system, as are the soffits above the top-level balconies, and part of the roof cappings on the top floor. Other areas clad in Rheinzink V25 are infill panels between window bands and at the carpark level.
"The depth of the balcony changed from east to west, from about 800mm to 1.5m," says Janssen. "We needed to provide an angled soffit in zinc, which would still maintain a sharp horizontal line. Craft Metals designed a fully adjustable telescopic substructure to achieve the desired effect."
Janssen says the maintenance-free Rheinzink titanium zinc in a pre-weathered pro finish presents a uniform and natural zinc patina.
