The brief

The owner approached us with a clear vision for their barn conversion, desiring a highly functional kitchen for their family of three while also serving as an inviting space for hosting large gatherings.

Central to their vision was a statement island to anchor the room.

To facilitate seamless entertaining, we incorporated a commercial kitchen in the background for cooking during events.

Additionally, a spacious table extending from the island offers versatility for both casual family breakfasts and formal dinners.

The owner conducted extensive research for furniture and hardware, prioritising a theme cohesive with the home’s aesthetic and local heritage.

Meet the brief

The project aimed to create a kitchen that stood out while seamlessly blending with the rustic charm of the barn.

Material selection played a crucial role, with recycled wood and natural stone chosen to align with the barn’s theme and to emphasise sustainability.

Challenges overcome included fitting the bespoke oak display cabinet against the rugged wall, showcasing our problem-solving skills.

The kitchen features enduring materials and includes a commercial studio kitchen out the back, for optimal functionality, and ensuring value for money.

The success of the design lies in the harmonious integration of various elements.

Timber beams and exposed brick walls are paired with distinctive patinated silver fronts, create an intriguing and visually appealing space.

This thoughtful combination enhances the overall aesthetic, contributing to the project’s success.

We were particularly pleased with how the project balances functionality and beauty.

The space caters to daily family needs while being well-suited for hosting larger gatherings.

The versatility and usability of the finished kitchen bring immense satisfaction to both myself and the homeowner.

Additional considerations

The choice of cabinetry and work surfaces aimed to honour the space’s inherent character, notably the exposed brick wall and oak details.

The table features Nero Assoluto, honed, while the worktops are leathered Nero Assoluto.

Notably, we decided to go for Roundhouse’s own patinated silver finish for the fronts of the island.

The cohesive palette was selected to complement the existing elements and create a harmonious visual appeal.

Sustainability

For me, sustainability is about creating long-lasting projects using the best materials.

For this kitchen, we selected elements in collaboration with the homeowners, ensuring that all materials come from sustainable sources.

A significant portion of the build incorporated recycled stone and wood, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.

It was crucial that the kitchen not only aligned with the overall build but also embodied a fully sustainable approach.

Summary

This bespoke kitchen design was influenced by the barn’s aesthetic with original lintels and beams.

A feature is the contrasting combination of a textured oak book-matched veneer with a sleek and modern patinated silver finish.

The modern oak Nightingale display cabinet was an important backdrop in the centre of the room, inspired by the architecture of the house.

This is a practical kitchen – it has a large two-tier island with all the everyday areas easily accessible.

A tea and coffee station, Quooker hot water tap and small induction ovens are all discreetly hidden, while the back kitchen is the main cooking area complete with commercial oven.
