Share and share alike could be one worthwhile expression to keep in mind if you are thinking of reconfiguring your home's interior spaces. As this master suite illustrates, even views can be shared. In the right situation, an interior window, or cutout in a wall, is an effective means of introducing light and scenery into the home.

When this penthouse apartment on level 15 of a boutique commercial building was purchased by new owners, architects Nicholas Murray and Caroline Loke were commissioned to reconfigure the space. However, while the rest of the apartment underwent considerable layout changes, which transformed it from a bachelor-style pad into a warm, light and art-filled space, the orientation of the master bedroom and ensuite was retained.

"The ensuite is a simple box-shape in the corner of the room. From the bedroom, it is accessed by a short corridor that also leads to the wardrobe space," says Murray.

The window between the bedroom and ensuite is an original feature, however a Venetian blind that ruined the symmetry was removed.

"Due to a leaking problem, all the other windows in the apartment, including those in the master bedroom, were replaced during the refurbishment," he says."The sliding doors along the exterior of the bedroom open up onto a small terrace, that connects to a larger deck outside the living area."

In redecorating the apartment, the homeowner worked with interior designer Michael Rigg. The bedroom features a colour scheme rich in warm, natural colours, many of which were matched to some of the owner's many artworks. The embroideries over the bed are commission pieces which were freehand sewing machine stitched by artist Alison Withers.

However, the contemporary styling of the ensuite is more meditative, with pristine white-glass wall tiles subtly softened with off-white porcelain floor tiles and stainless steel accents. The tub is the bathroom's major feature. Situated under the internal window it provides an ideal spot for contemplation of the city vista.

Murray says a major part of the renovation included installing complex smart home technology. In the ensuite, some of the benefits of this technology are the phone system, a built-in LCD television at the foot of the tub, and the speakers built into the ceiling.
