Refined and well connected

This pale-toned, refined kitchen forms the central anchor point of the home – an adroit layout enhances flow for large gatherings while providing an ideal base for day-to-day family meal preparation

Designed by Justin Holman and Elizabeth Williams, Hum Architects

From the architects:

Our homeowners, a busy family who enjoy entertaining, came to us looking for a new home that takes advantage of the surrounding views and supports their modern lifestyle.

The kitchen forms the central anchor point of the home, surrounded by the living and outdoor entertainment zone together with a stunning meals area featuring a double height void and sweeping curved stair overlooking the pool.

Our strategy focussed on functional planning of the kitchen within the constraints of a narrow site, while allowing for an open plan that presents a show piece kitchen island.

The layout enhances the flow of a large gathering, emphasising indoor/outdoor connections to areas for relaxation, including the outdoor fireplace and dining area adjacent to the barbecue.

At the same time, practical elements incorporated into the joinery and the butler’s pantry provide a base for day-to-day family meal preparation.

An all-electric kitchen with high efficiency appliances contributes to the project’s sustainability goals, minimising the design's carbon footprint.

Functionality was paramount, with dual access points facilitating ease of movement, especially for the children.

Thoughtful placement of the fridge and pantry streamlines high-traffic areas, while the butler’s pantry allows for concealed work areas.

Worktops cater to both culinary tasks and social gatherings.

The light tones of the polished concrete floor are reflected in the colour selections for other interior materials, including stone and joinery in the living room and kitchen.

A neutral toned rear bench & splashback, strategically balanced with dark timber tones hiding integrated appliances, provides a backdrop for the island bench featuring dramatic, glossy, Dekton ‘Bergen’

The kitchen reflects close attention to detail in the design, with discreet led lighting and elegant brass tapware combined with sleek shadowline details.

This aesthetic, colour palette and range of textures have been extended beyond the kitchen, ensuring a cohesive design language throughout the home.

As a result, this practical yet sophisticated kitchen design is highlighted against the wider surroundings – exceeding our homeowners' expectations for a functional, and visually arresting entertainment space.
