Feeding the hordes of hungry skiers and snowboarders at Coronet Peak is now a whole lot easier, thanks to Burns & Ferrall's extensive kitchen, bar and restaurant fit-outs

It's one thing to have great snow and spectacular runs, but ski fields also need to be able to cater to the crowds that flock to the slopes each winter. As the owners of the Coronet Peak ski field in Queenstown can testify, the increasing popularity of a ski field can strain resources.

For Coronet Peak, the solution was a total refit, with new facilities built to cater to the 5000 daily visitors. Burns & Ferrall, a specialist commercial kitchen manufacturer, was contracted to build and install all the new kitchen and restaurant facilities, the fast-food service bars, POS counters and VIP room facilities.

CEO Chris George says the project, which needed to be completed in just 14 weeks, was all the more challenging due to the time constraints, access problems, cold weather and transport problems.

"We were able to minimise potential on-site delays by careful planning and utilising the services of our in-house CAD division," George says. "Undertaking our own stainless steel manufacture and having a national installation service was also invaluable in helping us deliver the project on time and on budget."

George says Burns & Ferrall's design team had regular onsite CAD meetings to ensure customer's expectations were met.

"The sales team also recommended new concepts that were adopted. These included a Hobart conveyer dishwashing system and a Rational self-cooking centre (SCC) combi, which saves the client space, time and money."

The company was responsible for all aspects of the kitchen and bar fit-outs, including all refrigeration, joinery and cooking facilities.

George says the project was one of the largest commercial projects in the South Island to be undertaken this year. Burns & Ferrall, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, has also been awarded the contracts for the Accor Grand Mecure Hotel in Wanaka, and the Christian camp at Kelvin Heights, Queenstown.
