Putting on a new coat
A blend of whites and off-whites gives this kitchen a more spacious, contemporary air
This renovation has replaced the kitchen's colourful 90s excesses with an understated palette of whites enhancing the sense of volume and high-lighting architectural volumes.
When interior designer Debra DeLorenzo was asked to give the kitchen a modern feel, addressing the colour palette was a central consideration.
"Panels of bright colours tend to break up the space, and make it look smaller," says DeLorenzo. "The new L-shaped cabinetry and island are in quarter Bison Hide, a warm off-white that gives the kitchen a roomy, slightly lived-in feel.

"The walls are painted in Ricecake, a serene white with a hint of green. This subtle hue is even more effective when seen against the ceiling, which is now a crisp, white Alabaster."
In addition, existing wood trim around the windows and where the ceiling meets the walls was either painted white or taken out completely.
"Removing this detailing encourages the eye to read the space as a single volume and allows the serene white palette to envelop the greater space."
The end result is a modern, spacious and approachable kitchen that works well in both visual and practical terms.
