Pride of place
Combining traditional and contemporary design aspects, this award-winning design becomes the central focus of an open-plan space

When the kitchen is the focal point of a larger space, the design can take on the role of an artwork. Cabinetry and appliances can be chosen not just for functionality, but also for their sculptural qualities, with plenty of storage to prevent clutter.
For this kitchen, located in the center of an open-plan loft apartment, designer Bonnie Settle from Cornerstone Design chose Decore¡ maple cabinetry with a Leyden door style and cobblestone finish. For a visual accent and to enhance the reflection of sunlight from the windows opposite, seeded glass was used for some of the cabinet doors. The style of this kitchen is a careful blend of the traditional and the contemporary, says Settle.
"A crackle-glass bar top lends a lightweight feel to the more traditional look of the granite countertops. An Aske¶ dishwasher and Viking warming drawer are integrated for a sleek look. Viking Designer series appliances, a Zephyr hood and a Franke sink add to this effect."
To meet storage requirements, the kitchen has roll-out drawers, drop-down trays, and Super-Susan base cabinets.

Settle won the Best Overall Contest Design award for this kitchen in Hadco's Designs that Matter 2008 contest. The same kitchen was also the national winner in the Design with Decore¡ contest. Settle is an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers.
