MODERN COVERED swimming centres provide benefits to competitors and spectators alike. Keeping out the wind and rain creates a comfortable environment for pushing the boundaries of speed. Perhaps the only real downside could be felt by participants in the inverted swimming style. No longer will backstrokers at venues such as Melbourne Aquatic Centre enjoy the warm sun on their faces, or view a deep blue sky as they glide up and down the lanes ad infinitum.

Giving backstroke specialists something to look at was probably not the ultimate goal of Peddle Thorpe Architects when they designed the roof form of the aquatic centre. However, the large triangulated trusses and inclined poles, finished in a high-gloss PPG protective coating, which support the semi-translucent roof create an interesting aesthetic. The chosen finish, PPG's PSX700, is also extremely durable and easy to clean, says the company's marketing manager Nuray Akdogan.

"PPG Architectural Finishes is a one-stop supplier who can advise and deliver on all paint requirements for commercial, residential and industrial markets. In addition to the thousands of colours available in the PPG decorative range, there are also specialist colours, such as pearls and metallics, available."

"As a global company, PPG has been supplying coatings to a wide range of industries for many years. This experience gives us the expertise to help specifiers with their entire paint needs for any project."

PPG products used at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre include PSX 700 Engineered Polysiloxane White applied over Amercoat 307 Epoxy Zinc Rich Primer.

"You will find PPG paint on many of the major airlines around the world as well as nearly all cars manufactured in Australia. The advanced technology paint systems extend to the construction industry as well as homes through its architectural paints range. This is an advantage that comes from being one of the largest paint companies in the world," says Akdogan.

PPG coatings are made in Australia from quality raw materials. Designed to withstand extreme local conditions, they are tough, durable and easy to maintain.

With its origins as a glass producer in 1883, PPG now specialises in paint, glass and chemicals. Manufacturers across the globe trust PPG Industries to supply them with protective and decorative paints, sealants, adhesives, metal pre-treatment products, flat glass, fabricated glass products, fibre glass products and speciality chemicals.

"Whilst PPG is well known in the Australian automotive industry as the market leader of automotive coatings, it's more recent presence in the architectural and protective coatings segments are less well known. With a strong presence in all coatings segments, PPG is well placed to meet all the painting requirements for any project," says Akdogan.
