Building an ornate, period-style house is not something undertaken every day by most contractors. So when W R Bugbee & Associates was selected to build this home, there was a lot of research done by the president, Scot Bugbee.

He researched buildings in Washington DC to familiarize himself with the intimacy of Georgian architecture. When the project was ready to proceed, he began the consents process. Because of its height, the house required specialised consents from the building department and the neighborhood.

"You don't see a lot of this style of home especially here in the desert," he says. "This project was definitely outside the box."

Bugbee & Associates is a company well known for its quality finishes, especially with highly detailed work. Therefore it was well suited to the intricacies found in Georgian homes.

"In Georgian architecture, everything is symmetrical, so if you have anything slightly off, you pay dearly for it," Bugbee says.

The contractors also had to provide temporary building solutions to enable the owners to move in before the house was completed.

"The walls are clad in limestone and that is something not seen often in this part of the country. As a result, we had problems with availability of the stone. That was probably our biggest challenge, as it meant the home had to be completed out of sequence. In the end, it added a year onto the construction time."

He says the project was extremely rewarding.
