With the right design, you can use this vibrant colour to good effect, as this project shows.The owners of this kitchen wanted to keep the space light and fresh, with an urban, commercial ambience, but didn't want an all-white colour scheme. Their aim, says designer Tim Tokoragi of Schmidt Kitchens Australia, was to stop people in their tracks."Using nothing but white and stainless steel can often lead to something that looks cold and clinical. We wanted the space to remain inviting and full of life. The solution was simple to use colour, and lots of it."Commercial-grade appliances and stainless steel benchtops with a fine-brushed finish were selected for a commercial look. The addition of frosted glass and high-gloss cabinetry introduces another layer of interest. This sleek, contemporary kitchen has been enlived with the use of bright-red lacquered cabinetry and a range of different textures "It's all too easy to overstep the line and turn what should be clean and contemporary into a cold and lifeless space," he says. "In modern kitchen design, it is important to use contrasting textures and materials."To delineate the kitchen from the lounge and formal dining areas, a large stainless steel kitchen island was selected."Above it is a huge 2.2m-long island canopy rangehood that has an almost monolithic look to it," he says. "The island bench affords additional prep space, while providing a handy quick-stop for a rushed or informal bite to eat."Given the open-plan layout, storage space also needed to be considered. "This means that everything has its place and also ensures that everything is easily accessible.
