For a getaway vacation spot, it makes sense to maximise the natural surroundings from every vantage point. One of the most restful and contemplative places to take in the scenery is from the privacy of your bathroom. The owner of the scenic lodge on this island embraced this idea when considering the design of the bathrooms.

The brief to the designers for Delamore Lodge, was to re-create the feel of the natural environment that lay beyond the windows, says lodge owner and manager Roselyn Barnett-Storey.

"Natural materials are emphasized throughout the bathrooms and organic forms sculpted into or out from the plastered walls accentuatethis," she says. "A large, deep bath beside the window is set up high. With the windows open, the occupant can enjoy uninterrupted views of the scenery."

The bathrooms have an expansive feel, due to the extensive use of windows and an open shower area.

"The shower and bathing area are defined by a textured pebble floor," says the owner. "The pebbles provide a link to the natural environment, and have a pleasing massaging effect underfoot."

Plaster walls and a plaster ceiling in variegated tones have a flowing, organic feel. This look is extended to the molded plaster bath surround.

"The effect is as if the two-seater bath grows out of the building's structure, avoiding sharp lines and angles," says Barnett-Storey. "Even the soap receptacles next to the shower and bath have rounded edges, and are recessed into the plaster."

The vanity's backsplash is simply a raised area of plasterwork. This outlines the basin area without being obtrusive against the wall's texture and tone.

Natural wood, used for the vanity top, further extends the natural theme, while Kohler basins and glass shelving add a contemporary touch.
