There is an adage that a change is as good as a vacation, so it would be safe to say that a mix of the two would be highly desirable indeed. The remodeled master ensuite featured on these pages is an example of that combination. The owners of this master suite travel all over the world and wanted to bring some of their favorite travel experiences into their renovation, says Shirley McFarlane CKD, principal of McFarlane Design, Inc."The combination of materials marble, crystal, and beveled mirrors works to create a space in which the owners can relax and be pampered, as if they had traveled to one of their favorite European hotels. It is a soothing space with a sense of romance, in what could be described as a transitional style brought about by the mixing of timeless materials with modern engineering." Modern technology, in the form of the framless shower enclosure, meets old-world materials in this remodeled master ensuite. Multiple shower heads, underfloor heating and crystal scones are other elements that lend a sense of indulgence to the space. McFarlane says the design added space to the master bedroom, and transformed a series of closets, a hallway, and a small, outdated bath into a sumptuous master bath and dressing room."The original bathroom was situated at the end of a hall formed by a series of enclosed closets. By removing the internal walls created by these closets, and opening the space up, we were able to create a capacious master suite within the existing footprint."With more than 30 years' experience in kitchen and bathroom design, McFarlane says the secret to realizing quality designs lies in working with trusted industry professionals, such as interior designer Diane Hollman and contractor Scott Reid with whom she collaborated on this project. Expansive use of mirrors ensures the bathroom appears flooded with natural light - a big change from the previously enclosed space, says designer Shirley McFarlane.
