Chandeliers running throughout help unify the original and developed premises
Central to the Smith & Caughey's fit-out was achieving seamless harmony between the original and the new. A unifying element was provided by the 18 ornate chandeliers introduced throughout the expanded ground floor and the mezzanine in the adjacent building.
These harmonising elements were installed by Caldwell & Levesque Electrical, but the company's involvement began much earlier in the project, says project manager Stuart Caldwell.
"We were responsible for the expanded and upgraded base electrical supply this was stage one of our involvement, with stage two involving the design and installation of the electrics for diverse elements such as the air conditioning, escalators and the supply running out to the individual displays."
The wiring was also renewed in the original building, including revamped electrics for the upstairs offices.
It was important that Smith & Caughey's could keep trading during the fit-out of the original building and the company liaised closely with the client throughout. Work in this area was often completed outside of shop hours, with Caldwell & Levesque's team working into the night to keep pace with a tight time schedule.
"Perhaps a given, considering the client involved, but the standards of this fit-out were very high," says Caldwell. "In terms of creating a harmonious greater space, with the chandeliers in place it looks like the space was built as a single entity from day one."
