New generation
Sustainable design determined every aspect of this house by NZ Built
Sustainable design is not just a once-over-lightly treatment for this project it has been woven into every aspect of the design. Paul Belcher, director of high-end building company NZ Built, says the green approach started with the initial planning and design. It was then extended to the material choice and the effect this would have on the energy efficiency of the property.
Key features include the use of a waffle concrete slab built on polystyrene pods, which improves the insulation. Further insulation is provided by a premium-grade, fire-resistant Novatherm polyester insulation, double glazing on all exterior doors and windows, and the use of Palliside cladding.
Where possible, locally manufactured products were specified. These include the use of solid-filled concrete block and steel framing. In addition, rainwater is collected and stored for use in hose taps, the laundry and toilet flushing.
Belcher says NZ Built specialises in homes at the higher end of the market, and is currently working on two large projects, both valued at more than $2 million.
