A kitchen designed for restaurant-grade serious cooks generally includes large appliances, which are likely to be overpowering in open-plan spaces.

Valcucine Minneapolis designed the kitchen and matching dining cabinetry for this new home by architect Charles Stinson in the Lotus Lake community.

Valcucine's kitchen designer, Emily Little, says the homeowners wanted a contemporary kitchen that met their needs as serious cooks, and had a warm feel.

To do this, Little specified Valcucine's Riciclantica door program, characterized by its aluminum structural frame and 2mm aesthetic panel of cherry veneer on a laminate backing. Riciclantica also uses an integrated handle that looks streamlined, like the architecture of the house. A cherry wood breakfast bar, soapstone countertops and a glass backsplash add texture and sheen to the space.

Large stainless steel appliances such as a commercial-grade Wolf range, separate Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer units, and a microwave, give the owners the cooking capacity they wanted. To provide ergonomic, easily accessible storage, the kitchen includes Valcucine's round corner tower with a translucent door.

"Our biggest challenge with this project was to ensure this cook's kitchen with large stainless steel appliances did not dominate the open plan living spaces," says Little.

Her solution was to separate the refrigerator and freezer, placing them like bookends on each side of the kitchen. Translucent upper cabinets, the corner tower and buffet hatches lighten the space and echo the large windows of the house.

"This kitchen is designed to be highly functional for the owners, as well as dura-ble, water-resistant and stable in the Min-nesota climate, where seasonal humidity levels fluctuate substantially," says Little.
