Natural choice

To complement the rubble sandstone wall and plastered exterior of this apartment complex, a Monier Traditional tile roof was specified

Location is often a determining factor in the choice of building materials. While some residential projects reinforce neighbourhood traditions, others reflect a modern interpretation.

The immediate landscape influenced the design of the apartment complex featured here. Designed by Rob Winter of The Winter Group and built by SimCar Construction, the apartments border a private golf course. A rubble wall featuring randomly cut sandstone blocks enhances the natural setting.

The textured look is complemented by the choice of Monier Traditional concrete roofing tiles in Cottage Grey from CSR Roofing.

Simcar Construction director Joe Mangione says the tiles are particularly suited to the low pitch of the roof, which is a distinctive feature of the house. The design incorporates a turret that houses the lift shaft.

"Deep, angled timber fascias also draw attention to the roof profile, so they are painted to match."

Mangione says Monier concrete tiles were specified also for their reliability.

"We have used these tiles many times previously and found them to be a very durable option. The quality of the Monier product and the workmanship is something we can rely on."

Monier concrete tiles are designed and manufactured to meet the needs of the Australian market and the country's climate extremes. The tiles are salt-resistant, and provide good thermal and sound insulation. They are suitable for rain-water collection and come with a 50-year guarantee.

CSR Roofing recently launched a competition to find the best Monier concrete or Wunderlich terracotta roof in Australia. The CSR Roofing Design Awards apply to residential projects and offer substantial holiday prizes to architects, designers, building contractors and homeowners.
