Architectural innovation is often dependent on technology, materials and finding the right trades to bring an idea to fruition. This was precisely the case for the Novotel Auckland Airport hotel project. The prominent V columns at the base of the building were originally intended to be built by precast concrete manufacturers.

When these trades passed on the project, the project managers approached Unicast Cladding Systems to see if it was possible to make the complex, three-dimensional columns in glass fibre-reinforced concrete (GRC). Director David Romanes says the answer was a resounding yes'.

"Changing the specification from precast concrete to GRC meant the V columns were no longer on the critical path. This allowed a change to a structural steel frame, enabling the building to be constructed faster. GRC also had the advantage of reducing the mass and dead load on the structure."

Romanes says GRC is ideally suited to the manufacture of three-dimensional objects. "Since GRC is typically a 12-15mm-thick skin sprayed into a mould, it is always lighter than precast concrete."

Unicast has invested in 3-D CAD modelling software and operators to further develop casting methods and mould fabrication techniques. To assist with this, the firm has also entered into a number of strategic relationships with other companies providing services such as CAD routing, 3-D scanning and 3-D prototyping.
