Just like fashion, design trends for kitchens and bathrooms ebb and flow they just take a little longer. This is largely because planning a new kitchen or bathroom is a big investment and not something most of us undertake very often. But when we do, we want to be sure we get it right, which is where Harvey Norman Renovations can help. The company's show kitchens and bathrooms present the latest design trends to come out of Europe, so you can be sure the kitchen you choose today won't date tomorrow.Sales and marketing manager Chris Ludlam says the trends forecast for the next few years include the continuing popularity of shiny surfaces, such as lacquered cabinetry and colour-backed glass splashbacks. Glass is also appearing on entire walls, he says."At the same time, we are also seeing a resurgence of mosaic tiling, in both kitchens and bathrooms. These are the very small and very glossy tiles that add a textural effect." A view of a bethroom, white tiled floor, white toilet, green tiled wall, glass dividing wall, stone vanity, large mirror, spot lights, chrome faucetry and circular bowl like sink, accessories. Benchtops frequently feature aggregate mixes, which helps counter the glossy finishes. Ludlam says benchtops are also either very deep or very thin, with the thinner look enhancing the horizontal lines of a contemporary kitchen."There's also a demand for highly patterned wood veneers that add visual interest to a room. The lighter, more neutral-coloured timbers work well in casual settings, such as beach houses particularly when used with white benchtops."Other colour trends indicate the continuing popularity of grey and sand tones, but there's also a move towards red, white and black.Frosted glass cabinetry with stainless steel or aluminium edging is another strong look. This trim often features around island cabinetry. Glass mosaic splashbacks are a stong design trend - one of several new directions reported by the consultants at Harvey Norman Renovations stores. "Many people want a furniture look for their kitchen, so islands are often designed with legs, and even wall cabinetry can be made to appear freestanding," says Ludlam.Stainless steel continues to dominate the appliance market, where products are updated constantly. Many homeowners are once again enjoying the benefits of a warming drawer next to their under-bench oven. Coffee machines and combination microwave ovens are also in demand.Harvey Norman Renovations recognises that many homeowners lead busy lives and don't have time to worry about their kitchen installation. Consequently, the company has developed the Platinum Installation Service an accreditationprogramme designed to ensure the company's exacting standards are met. On-site supervisors are employed to ensure renovations run smoothly. For more information, visit the showrooms: NSW: Harvey Norman Superstore, 250 Parramatta Rd, Auburn, phone (02) 9202 4545; Harvey Norman Renovations, Domayne Centre, 84 O'Riordan St, Alexandria, phone (02) 8339 7311.
