When you have moved eight times in 19 years due to work commitments, it pays not to get too attached to a house. But it's only natural to want to create a comfortable, inviting home interior.

Interior designer Kristin Drohan, who is married to a colonel in the air force, addressed the problem head-on she designed an interior that could be uplifted and placed in a new home and still look just as good as the original.

Drohan says the secret lay with the choice of a classic, monochromatic palette, which won't date. Furniture and furnishings are either black or white, or a combination of both. Color accents are then applied in this house she opted for bright red and Wedgwood blue to provide plenty of visual impact.

"The furniture is also very versatile it can be swapped from room to room and still look as though it was designed for that position," she says. "For this reason, also, the same colors feature right through the house."

Drohan says an Andrew Martin black and red fabric that features on pillows in the living room, and a large painting provided the starting point for her latest project. The painting sits next to a key furniture piece a custom-painted black and white striped chest that was bought for a client and then exchanged.

"The chest anchors an area I call the cocktail lounge," says the designer. "I like to have an intimate space like this in every house where friends can gather for drinks. Often, I have to rethink the arrangement of the rooms this room is technically the dining space."

Other key furniture pieces include a black display cabinet with heirloom family silver on show, and a large black cabinet in the living room. Here the wow factor is introduced by a zebra-striped ottoman from Drohan's own furniture collection, and the colorful pillows. The pillow fabric also adorns a custom Roman blind beside a new window seat in the hallway.
