Walls in the new building at Westpac on Takutai Square are enlivened by an art installation featuring a heritage coin collection. Each coin is encased in 8mm scratch-resistant acrylic, which was fabricated by Ashfield Plastics, a specialist acrylic fabricator.Owner Tony Bowman says because the acrylic is unavailable in New Zealand, the company worked closely with PSP to source sheets from overseas. "PSP specialises in the supply of Plexiglas acrylic sheeting. The company was able to track down six sheets, which were air freighted to New Zealand from Plexiglas in Germany." Bowman says Ashfield Plastics fabricated the acrylic to fit each coin, and polished each piece using a diamond polishing system. "This polishing system ensures the acrylic will last a lot longer than the more common flame polishing, which would have put more stress on the acrylic and can result in crazing and cracking."Ashfield Plastics also made the brackets to secure each piece of acrylic to the wall.
