Creating a kitchen to fit with a specific style of house calls for careful choices in colors and materials.

For a kitchen that has the functionality of a modern design, but the comfort and style suited to a Tudor-style home, The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn chose to use subtle tones in wood and slate.

"The perimeter cabinetry is knotty alder, with a raised panel door style. The homeowner requested that the central island have the look of a piece of antique furniture, so the cabinetry is painted black with a distressed finish, giving it an aged look," says designer Susan Klimala.

Adding visual warmth and texture is a mahogany butcherblock used for the island countertop. A touch of color and a sense of solidity in the kitchen are provided by the multi-toned slate backsplash. This material is also used for the flooring.

Despite its name, The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn can supply cabinetry for other rooms aside from the kitchen, says Klimala.

"For those building a new home, it can be convenient to have one company supply and install the cabinetry for every room in the house. We provide this service and have a wide range of custom cabinetry lines for any style of home."

This home won the Gold Award in the Northern Illinois Homebuilders Association 2007 Icon Awards for New Construction.
