Named the Fleet of Putrajaya - these majestic sentinels are actually residential towers

Not typically Malaysian at first glance, on closer examination the architecture of these designs does reveal a subtle Islamic influence.

These towers will form a residential component for Precinct 4, the new federal administrative centre of Malaysia. A competition winner by Malaysian firm, and masterplanner for Putrajaya, Hijjas Kasturi, and Rome-based firm Manfredi Nicoletti, the development will feature a number of sustainable design elements.

Such features will include terraces, sunshades, natural ventilation and planted roof terraces. Alternative energy sources will also be harnessed and, overall, the development is expected to emit 50% less CO2 than residential projects of a similar scale.

Putrajaya, named for the first Malaysian prime minister, is based on a system of connected islands. It was created by flooding a large oil palm plantation. The masterplan (lower left) depicts the government administration buildings at the centre of the islands, while residential units face the water.
