Details such as a paved dining floor, aged facades, and even a suspended washing line, have made walking into this restaurant like stepping out onto an Italian street

With a rustic and relaxed, yet buzzing ambience, the Italian dining experience has worldwide appeal. It is this atmosphere that Bankstown Sports wanted to capture with its new venue, La Piazza. Paynter Dixon was commissioned to design and create the restaurant, which marked the club's 50th anniversary.

The result is a re-creation of a traditional Italian street and village square, complete with Roman archways and cobblestone pavers. Three-storey-high building facades with Juliet balconies and wrought iron balustrades add to the Italian flavour of the venue. Paynter Dixon's onsite project manager Chris Horan says the design focus was to ensure authenticity by paying close attention to detail.

"The piazza facades feature warm, earthy colours such as ochre and terracotta, which have been aged to reflect a patina consistent with the period. Distressed timber and metal were used to create the dining furniture, which is reminiscent of rustic kitchen tables and chairs found in Italian farmhouses," he says.

Landscaping, such as rose bushes, olive trees and potted grapevines, adds to this look while also contributing some colour. An expansive restaurant and venue, La Piazza offers seating for up to 400 diners.
