With the popularity of clean, uncluttered kitchens, distinctive light fittings can become the focal point of the room even when the lights are switched off.

Lighting Direct's imported range from Eglo of Austria is designed to enhance contemporary kitchens in a number of ways, says general manager Dean Fulford.

The seven-light Tanga fitting from Eglo features a line of G9 halogen lights similar to a row of burning candles. With this effect the 40W bulbs give the appearance of seven illuminated crystal highlights.

Fulford says this light fitting is often used in open-plan living area to visually connect the kitchen and dining zones. Its chrome finish is designed to match the sleek stainless steel appearance of modern cooking appliances and tap fittings.

Amidst the white benchtops and opaque glass cabinetry doors popular in today's kitchens, sculptured light fittings can make for appealing centre pieces, says Fulford.

"A single red Sky glass pendant offers a splash of colour and its distinctive appearance is a visual counterpoint to monochromatic interiors."

The pendant's coloured glass finish filters the bright light from the 70W incandescent bulb. It casts a glow through the open end at the base of the lamp, onto the working area below.

For flexible lighting options, Fulford says a dimmer feature should ideally be installed.

"This ensures that bright light is available for food preparation, yet once the meal is served, it can be dimmed to produce a soft rosy glow conducive to a more relaxing ambiance."
