In many renovation projects, lighting takes a back seat to other aspects of the design, such as the layout of rooms or the choice of wall coverings.

However, ECC Lighting's Katarein Mulder says that by thinking about the lighting early in the design phase, a homeowner can ensure a better result.

"Lighting can complement a new interior by dramatically enhancing the overall look and mood in a space, while also making a room easier to use."

Mulder says there are three kinds of lighting to consider for any project. The general lighting of a room is known as ambient lighting, while task lighting gives illumination to work areas, for example, a lamp suspended over the kitchen bench. Lastly, accent lighting is used to highlight architectural features or artwork.

When people are renovating, they often choose lighting according to the existing character of the home, says Mulder.

"A homeowner upgrading the lighting system in an older home will perhaps opt for traditional fittings such as chandeliers, to create a statement in entrance halls or above dining tables."
