The new Chews Lane reflects a genteel, old-world aesthetic. An important part of this ambience comes from the underfoot paving laid in a traditional pattern, it has a handcrafted look.

Horokiwi Paving supplied and laid paving on the ground for Chews Lane, and on the apartment balconies from levels eight to nineteen. Managing director Peter Green says the brief from LT McGuinness was to supply a paver with sufficient strength to be laid on adjustable paver supports. It had to look good, be non-slip and tone in with the building and the surroundings.

"The adjustable paver supports were used on the balconies so the pavers can be lifted easily to access drains and services, as well as giving a flat surface for tables and chairs," says Green.

To this end, 600mm² honed ground pavers in non-slip concrete slabs, colour Otaki Grey, were installed on the balconies. At ground level, Horokiwi Paving laid the same clay pavers in Chews Lane as the company used for the Lambton Quay footpath upgrade a year earlier.

"Given the location, there was the potential for noise and dust pollution when cutting the slabs on site," says Green. "Our solution was to import a table saw large enough for an entire 600m² slab. We enclosed the saw and shifted it from floor to floor to keep disturbance to a minimum."
