Providing easy and safe stair access within a stadium is essential, especially as there is likely to be large groups of people moving through the building at the same time.
For the members' stairwell at the MCG, the architects specified Safestep stair treads, BJ studded rubber flooring and tactile tiles from Activa Rubber Flooring. In addition to the safety aspects, these products offer sound absorbency, easy maintenance and resiliency.
Safestep stair treads provide a one-piece nose, tread and riser for steps with a square-nose configuration. The nosing has a yellow abrasive insert, which makes it easier for people to see the stairsparticularly the visually impaired.
To match the stairs, Activa Rubber Flooring's BJ studded rubber tile was laid in the landings. Choosing the same black colour ensures visual continuity throughout the stairwell.
Activa's rubber tactiles feature at the bottom of each staircase. These ground-surface indicators for the visually impaired meet the AS1428.4 standard for identifying the approach to the stairs.
