Mainstream movie-going may never be the same again. With its angular planes and narrowing perspectives, the design of this new cinema complex introduces an element of fantasy that continues within
The complex nature of the new Berkeley cinema and a tight time frame made the project a challenge for the company responsible for the design management and construction. Mainzeal Property and Construction needed to fully understand the client's requirements and operational needs, says project manager Lance Painter.
"Cinemas are technical and challenging construction projects," he says. "The services are complex and the interface between the services, such as the power, projectors, fire protection and mechanical ventilation and lighting, are crucial to the success of the project."
Painter says achieving the sight lines, seating configurations, acoustic performance criteria, and inter-cinema separation issues also required the co-operation and input of many specialist designers and contractors.
"Getting to grips with the intense demands of the interior design the angled planes, textures, colours and lighting was also challenging. However, the commitment from all parties ensured the project was completed on schedule."
