Designing an interior in harmony with the architecture of the Berkeley cinema complex was a priority for the interior design team. Vee Smit of Space Studio says the design philosophy of the complex called for a distortion of reality, which was achieved through the tilting of angles within the interior space.

"Nothing is quite as it seems," she says. "The play of light, both static and dynamic, and the use of coloured lighting accentuate this philosophy."

As well as undertaking spatial planning and the design of all interior spaces, Space Studio developed the interior concept and documented the interior fitout for tender and construction.

Smit says the biggest challenge was maximising the use of the circulation space to meet all the requirements of the brief while ensuring good visibility to the upper level bar.

"A sense of exclusion and inclusion was essential for the Circle Bar and Lounge," she says. "Accommodating the client's desire for high-end plasma and projection technology was also critical in developing the design detailing."
