Precision laying enhances the visual impact of paving
The visual impact of the decorative clay pavers is enhanced by the precision laying. P&M Civil (formerly P&M Paving) was contracted to lay all the pavers in complex patterns that were determined by the architectural team, which consulted with the school board.
Mark McManus of P&M says highly detailed drawings were provided for the traditional Maori and Polynesian patterns. Due to the different qualities of the coloured clay, the dimensions of the fired Classic Brown and Cream pavers were slightly different, which added to the project's complexity.
"As with most jobs we undertake, tight time frames and a tight budget also added to the challenge," says McManus. "As well, we needed to undertake noisy and disruptive work outside of school hours, so classes would not be disturbed."
McManus says the name change from P&M Paving, which has been operating for more than 24 years, reflects the variety of works undertaken by the company.
"While we specialise in brick, concrete and stone paving, the core of a successful product is the site works the excavation, drainage and base-course preparation. The name change to P&M Civil better reflects these operations. For example, we have a range of excavators, from 3 to 20 tonnes, and a small fleet of trucks, including a vacuum unit for removing concrete waste contaminant."
P&M Civil's most recent addition is an environment pod, which incorporates a mobile bin for waste, and a soundproof cutting booth that contains all noise and concrete-cutting sediment.
P&M Civil works closely with clients and architects to problem solve and optimise the final product.
