With thermally efficient glass specified for the majority of the North Tower's facade, it was essential for the designers and builders to assign the glass supply contract to a versatile supplier.

G James Glass and Aluminium supplied the external glazing, including the curtain walling, window walling, winter-room sliding door glazing and frameless ground-floor glazing for the North Tower. To achieve the specific architectural requirements, G James Glass and Aluminium custom designed and engineered the systems for this project, says construction manager Patrick Harman.

"These included the horizontal and vertical sunshading devices connected to the facade, which were factory assembled and then site fixed to the facade panels prior to the installation," says Harman. "The facade was largely fabricated from pre-determined sizes, including the ground-floor frameless glass. This enabled a lot of the long-lead-time items, such as insulating double glazing glass units, to be pre manufactured prior to panel fabrication.

The scope of works for G James Glass and Aluminium included design, fabrication, and installation of the facade, using both standard and customised products. Glass types used were G James' own Solarplus LE40i on Green insulating glass units. These double-glazed units incorporate a Low E coating, bringing a balance between light transmission and solar energy control. By combining this coating with a body-tinted glass, such as the green used on this project, a desirable shading co-efficient is achieved while maintaining good light transmittance, minimal external reflectance and low U-value ratings. The spandrel glazing was G James' own ceramic-painted Colourlite Charcoal on Green.
