Of the several elements that contribute to the North Tower's 6-Star Green Star rating, a high-tech absorption chiller working in conjunction with the building's co-generation plant is a star feature.

Energy Conservation Systems (ECS) is the Australian distributor for Broad Absorption Chillers and was successful in supplying a Broad BZHE-75 multi-energy exhaust and hot-water fired absorption chiller for the project. The chiller forms an integral part of the co-generation system on the North Tower.

The design and construction team for the project, including George Floth Consulting Engineers, Leighton Contractors and Triple M, visited Broad's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in southern China, where they were impressed and confident enough to select a Broad Absorption Chiller, says ECS national business manager Broad absorption cooling Chris Flanagan.

"The chiller utilises 445°C exhaust gas and 88°C engine cooling water from the building's on-site co-generation plant to produce 730kW of cooling with an outlet chilled water temperature of 6°C," says Flanagan. "The chiller uses only a minute amount of electricity during its cycle, thus providing significant savings in both electricity and greenhouse gas emissions."

In addition, the chiller offers other environmental benefits by not using harmful refrigerant gases the refrigerant medium for this plant is pure water. Another function of the chiller is to incorporate a supplementary natural-gas fired burner which allows flexibility of operation even in the event of the building's co-generation system not operating.

"All the chiller's features, along with Energy Conservation Systems' strong technical presence and support, helped ensure the energy-efficient status of the North Tower," says Flanagan.
