When it came to designing and building a home for his own family, the director of Principle Homes put his many years of experience to good use

Design-and-build companies work on a great number of different projects, which means they are well positioned to know what works and what doesn't.

For their own home, George and Sarah Evangelidakis of Principle Homes drew on George's 21 years' experience in the residential building industry. The couple established Principle Homes in 2003, and today the company offers a variety of services, ranging from design-and-build to contract build and project management.

For their own home, the couple wanted a two-storey, five-bedroom house with a spacious, light-filled interior and good indoor-outdoor flow. As is often the case, however, the site presented a few design challenges.

"There were some issues in respect to the height-to-boundary regulations, but we were able to come up with solutions that didn't compromise the design," says George Evangelidakis.

The house has a modern weatherboard and plastered-brick exterior, with large bifolding doors opening to a landscaped pool, outdoor seating area and lawn.

Ambiance Interiors was contracted to create a simple, tranquil interior, with finishes similar to those of a five-star hotel. Designer Abie Petraska says the company also specified the paint colour of the house exterior, which was chosen to complement the lush green surroundings and to avoid reflected glare.

The kitchen was designed and built by Superior Kitchens & Joinery, a company that has been established for 22 years. Designer Jid Champness says the brief for this project required a modern, yet highly functional kitchen.

Tasmanian ash veneer cabinets with a dark oak stain and clear lacquered finish are teamed with Silestone Blanco Zeus benchtops and an island with waterfall sides. The scullery has white lacquered cabinets and open shelving. High-quality stainless steel appliances, including a 900mm-wide oven, enhance the sleek look.
