There is a story behind every remodeling project, and this award-winning project is no exception, says designer Bill Simone of Custom Design & Construction in Los Angeles.

"The home is owned by a Disney imagineer and his wife," Simone says. "When they returned to their once beautiful home, which was rented while they were on an extended work-related stay in Tokyo, Japan, they found their home was not in the same condition as they had left it. In fact, in their eyes, it was not even livable."

This bathroom was the winner of the small contemporary bathroom category of the NKBA Southern California Chapter's competition. Shown here is a shower, vanity, mirror and window. Touch of Class - Kitchens & Baths' designer Mieke Solari designed this space.

The couple's solution was to upgrade their entire single-story home, and incorporate an extraordinary bathroom remodel at the same time.

"Not surprisingly, the new bathroom has a distinct Japanese influence, while also being much more modern," Simone says. "We shipped a true soaking tub from Japan to create an authentic wet room. The entire bathroom was designed to get wet the walls, floor, tub."

Simone also introduced natural, textural elements in the rustic earth slate walls and golden green honed slate flooring. A wood water chute, wood platforms and bathing stool are also in keeping with the Japanese aesthetic.

The room was designed to flow together with the special design elements of the home as a whole. And Simone says, although opening up the tight space was a challenge, being able to integrate the client's vision with the architectural requirements has made the project a true success story.
