Shaped like the exhausts of a rocket, the rangehood in this kitchen was chosen for its function and form
Creating a practical yet aesthetically pleasing kitchen in a modest space requires careful consideration of the cooking process. Cooking odors, for example, can easily become trapped in a smaller space. One way to introduce a powerful extraction unit into a smallish area is to make it a central feature.
Nicole Hill, of Bontempi Cucine, created this kitchen working within a predetermined modest space. The homeowners wanted a workspace that catered to their love of cooking and entertaining.

"With the kitchen having both a cooktop grill and a barbecue wok burner, we needed an extraction unit that could handle heavy-duty cooking fumes," says the designer. "It made sense to make a feature of the unit, as it would be very visual in the open-plan space. While the room had a small footprint, it also had a good ceiling height, which could handle the range hood's dynamic proportions."
The sleek cabinetry was selected from a range of designs by Italian manufacturer Bontempi Cucine. The cabinetry was then custom built to this kitchen's specifications and shipped from Italy.
Recessed metal trim handles on the cabinetry complement the kitchen's stainless steel appliances and minimalist feel.
Hill says there is an emphasis on texture in the room, from the dining table's swirling pattern in reconstituted stone to the toughened glass backsplash.
