Inside story
A high level of specification is evident throughout Lumley Centre's interior, from the intricately planned foyer through to lighting and office design
Standing near sea level, Lumley Centre exudes a strong, natural quality, with stonework featuring on exterior faces. However, the architects found ways to extend this natural feel into the tower's interior.
Schist New Zealand processed and supplied the river schist used as a feature wall that runs from the entry lobby out to the building's exterior facade, says manager Diane Ward.
Schist was chosen in part because its grey-blue tones complement other elements of the building.
"The stone was specified with a natural face, in three sizes. This was to achieve an ashlar appearance, comprising random composition of rectangular pieces and sizes," she says.
"The schist originates in boulder form from South Island rivers, and is then split by hand with bolster and mallet, prior to any processing. The split face is left for reasons of texture and consistent colour," Ward says.
The blue-coloured schist is shot through with mica and quartz, producing a sparkling effect.
