Low barrel vault ceiling with maple panels, and low table lighting. Stovetop and kitchen accessories, and built-in oven and dishwasher. Black granite countertop, and high chairs. Square-ish windows for the kitchen. Cupboards. Dining room with long windows, dining table, chairs and accessories, low hanging lighting. Tile flooring.

An effective design project should optimize the functionality of the space for the owners. Another central consideration is ensuring the completed environment is an inviting place to be in.

The two kitchens featured on these pages were designed by architect Tim Bjella, of Arteriors Architecture. They are both solid family kitchens that offer plenty of room to move, and at the same time achieve a strong creative presence.

"Arteriors creates exciting one-off designs that you won't find in a plan-book," says Bjella. "Our projects evolve from listening to the specific needs and aesthetic preferences of our clients. The result is individual and ergonomic."

For the orange kitchen above, the family wanted a contemporary kitchen.

Bjella designed a large, open-plan area. Curved walls add a touch of playfulness, and the island, a strong sculptural element. As well as providing counter space and storage, the large mass of the island helps to anchor the room visually.

"Every one of our designs undergoes months of thoughtful designing and detailing," says Bjella.

Arteriors' attention to detail ensures that every facet of the home or interior is clearly understood, thereby minimizing expensive fixes or problems during and after construction.

The plan for the vaulted kitchen featured on the facing page was to create an inviting family work space that offered plenty of room to move, says the architect.

The layout consists of a central cooking area, flanked by a storage area on one side and a clean-up area on the other. Multiple work areas allow several family members to utilize the space at the same time.

"As well as an effective ergonomic layout, the kitchen's rich palette of materials and classic forms create an interesting and inviting air."
