There has been plenty written about the untapped potential of city waterfronts. Auckland Council's revamp of Hurstmere Green in Takapuna is a prime example of what can be done.

One of several projects designed to transform Takapuna as a vibrant metropolitan centre, Hurstmere Green is now a much more modern, up-to-date open space for people to enjoy.

Designed by Sills van Bohemen Architects and built by Auckland Transport and Kalmar Construction, the revitalised green provides a direct pathway from Hurstmere Road to The Strand beachfront as well as improved connections to the surrounding buildings.

The design incorporates tiered concrete seating that forms a natural amphitheatre, and provides a place for people to relax and enjoy the surroundings wood sun loungers are an innovative touch. The green will also be used for public art exhibitions and performances.

Mayor Len Brown says the design team and the builders have captured the spirit of Takapuna.

Chris Darby, chairman of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, which championed the project, says the project has set the benchmark for the unfolding of the new Takapuna.

"Hurstmere Green had been transformed from a short-cut to a car park to an inviting oasis of calm, nestled between the rattle and hum of the retail centre and a great urban beach. We have to get smarter about how we live in this fantastic city and what we are doing in Takapuna is a good example of that thinking."
