History repeats Wynyard Quarter's Old Red Shed - paint supplied by Resene

One of the great aspects of adaptive reuse is when original features of a building can be retained or even enhanced. The refurbishment of Wynyard Quarter has revitalised part of Auckland's waterfront, turning a neglected area into a thriving, family-friendly destination.

Part of the renovation centred around the Old Red Shed used as a goods store from the 1930s one of the area's most iconic features. The weathered building has been spruced up, but its character maintained, including its red doors.

Contracted to paint the building, Pacific Link Property Services contacted paint specialist Resene to ensure the doors matched their original brightness, says Resene marketing manager Karen Warman.

"Projects such as this highlight how Resene can work with companies such as Pacific Link to achieve a customised outcome. Using the latest technology, Resene is able to create a sample from just about any surface and then either match that to an existing Resene colour, or create an entirely new one."

Similar technology is available through the Resene website, and via an iPhone application, which allows anyone to match an existing colour or identify a colour from a photograph or picture and have that turned into a coloured paint.
