A building's prominence on the skyline adds a level of responsibility to the architect's brief for a project. If the building is visible from far and wide, it has to respond to that challenge.

Locker Group worked with the architects of the Ivory Apartments in Auckland's Grey Lynn to ensure the building had good visual impact from around the city. Locker Group manufactures Pic Perf, a decorative product made from aluminium panels, perforated with holes in a range of sizes to create an indelible image.

For this project, the clients chose a detailed representation of a fern; designs were then drawn up and the final image approved by the client. The fern pattern was perforated into 2400mm x 1200mm powdercoated aluminium panels, which are designed so they fit together like a jigsaw with no visible joins, and the panels were supplied to the contractor for installation.

Nicole Bell of Locker Group says clients often choose Pic Perf when they want a project to have strong visual impact.

"However, this is a very versatile product that can also be used for a number of other purposes," she says. "Pic Perf can be overlaid on glass to provide a sunscreen or to improve privacy without blocking light into a building. As well as being used as a decorative feature on a building, the panels can also be made into gates and other practical products," says Bell.
