Open-plan family living spaces have become the norm for contemporary homes. But there is a need to clearly define the various functions within these areas either by design or by color.

This new house, designed by architect Jim McCalligan, does both. The country house has a large, barrel-vault ceiling that extends over the entire family living area. Within the overall space, walls with large portals help differentiate the kitchen, dining and living areas. But a variety of Kelly-Moore paint colors were also used to highlight different planes and key architectural elements, which include a cupola clerestory.

"We chose a summer palette, with colors taken from the landscape," says McCalligan. "The house sits on a hilltop meadow site with several large oak trees. The surrounding colors influenced both the interior and exterior of the house."

A large wall behind the kitchen area is painted in Kelly-Moore Triangle Lodge a khaki shade that provides a rich contrast to the Kelly-Moore Temple City used for side walls and the ceiling.

"Color helps accentuate interesting architectural forms so they are perceived as sculptural elements," says McCalligan. "Here, it highlights the barrel shape of the ceiling, and the portals in the walls."

The fireplace wall is painted in Kelly-Moore Spanish Sand a warm gold shade. In the hallway, a two-storey staircase is painted in Kelly-Moore Rialto a distinctive apricot-terra cotta color.

"The treatment of this circulation area is a little more playful, but it still complements the earthy tones."

McCalligan says he frequently chooses Kelly-Moore paints for his projects.

"I can always find the right shades, and the staff are helpful and accommodating when I need a particular sample or fandeck," he says.
