Part of a heritage home, this kitchen rethink creates a modern family hub with improved flow, a connection to the courtyard, and a focus on social interaction

Designed by Angelique Perak, Studio Duo

From the architect:

Our restoration and modernisation of a terrace house within the context of its historical framework, included this kitchen.

We were responsible for the detailing, scheduling and interior architecture based on the DA and CC plans by heritage architects Tropman and Tropman.

The project was advised and overseen by lead heritage architect Tasman Storey through to its completion.

Our brief was to reflect the preliminary layout concept covered in the DA documents and develop this to include considered detailing and layering for a contemporary city home – custom joinery, doors and windows were included as well as an articulated palette of finishes.

The redesigned kitchen caters to modern family requirements, serving as a congregational space for nourishment and social interaction.

Plus, this redesign included a wider opening to the adjoining drawing room and new French doors to the courtyard.

The existing sandstone windowsill block from the kitchen window was painstakingly removed and lowered to create the new door threshold.

Internal access to the butlers pantry/laundry was facilitated through a walk-through drinks area and lift lobby.

The old back door stone threshold has been preserved and celebrated with a new glass insert hovering over the time-worn element.

In addition, the courtyard redesign incorporated repurposing the original kitchen coal-range as a gas BBQ and terracing the space to provide seating and lounging areas.

This restoration and modernisation project breathes new life into a cherished heritage home, honouring its past while embracing the demands of modern living.
